Phil 'derGoat' Rogers
? - 2002
I'll sure miss him. He made so many friends here...such an impact on so many lives. He never had a cross word for anyone, and he always managed to make everyone smile...even
when he was in terrible pain. Even to the end, he was a giant among men.
We love you, Goat. We'll miss you very much. Thank you for touching my heart, like you touched so many others. You won't be forgotten.
Rest in peace, my friend,
- PAR

Phil was a very special friend of mine, and I shall miss him dearly. One day I'll see him again, and until then, I'll continue to laugh and smile, because that's what he would want me to do.
Der Goat, I miss you, I love you, and I thank you. You were truely a wonderful man. I hope you're frolicking in those green pastures, fertilizing God's heavenly grass, butting the clouds, and eating all the tin cans you could ever want. We miss you.
Now, it's time for another good cry.

I am so sorry to hear that DerGoat has gone on to higher pastures. He will be remembered for his wit as well as his ability to make a connection to us in an individual sort of way.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Der Goat....
He seemed like such a great guy - I'm sorry I never got to meet him other than through this site. He was one of the very first to welcome me to the site and I will always remember that.

I didn't know Der Goat well. I really didn't know him at all. I have never met him. I have never exchange e-mails with him, nor have I ever chatted with him. Yet his passing leaves an emptiness inside of me. While I didn't know Der Goat, I had the privilege of reading his words. He often made me laugh, and he often made me think, but he also made me look at myself. He made me wish I could be more like him, and wonder why I couldn't be. He set a standard of decorum I could never hope to achieve, yet he inspired me to try. Der Goat's wit, wisdom, and seemingly infinite patience has left an indelible mark on me. Without even knowing it, he made me a better man. I think he made all of us better people. Der Goat's passing has left a black hole in all our lives, but he left a light on for all of us to follow. I will try, Der
Goat. I will try to follow your light and become more like you. I guess what I'm trying to say is you mattered, Der Goat. To me, and to everyone you touched, you mattered. What more could we ask of any man?
I will miss you, De Goat.

The human spirit transcends religion, race, ethnicity and politics. No matter how great our earthly differences, Phil lives on in some way for each of us. With that, I offer this favorite prayer in his memory:
Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morningšs hush, I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die.

I never had a chance to meet Der Goat in person but I felt like we were friends. I miss him already. Thursday night's meeting at The Speakeasy will be dedicated to his memory, no butts about it.

I just want to echo the sentiments of my collegues at the Speakeasy. Der Goat always provided an angle as only he could. We'll miss ya, but your spirit will live on in the Big Easy. Here's to a true American hero.

I'm not an overly emotional person but I'm overcome with sadness at this news. Der Goat was the first to welcome myself and my friends from the speakeasy when we first came to this site. He said "Those folks from Louisiana are allright by me." Over the years I noticed he welcomed each newcomer with the same grace and class. I'll miss the lighthearted digs we took at each other through the caption contests and message boards, and I'll always miss his fatherly presence on the site.

Thank you all for the years of friendship with my father. I know that you each enriched his life and therefore, the lives of the rest of us in the family as well.
We will all miss "Der Goat," but we will never forget him.

I am so thankful to have met Phil. Was a great four years. He made such an impact on many lives. My heart goes out to family and friends. Now I know why I had such a bad day yesterday, without realizing why. We never lose anyone as long as they are in our memories. Phil, you are truly etched deep within ours.

Things here will never be der same without dear Goat, but his cyber spirit will never leave us. Phil and I exchanged a lot of e-mails in the year-and-a-half I was privileged to know him; the love and wisdom and, well, the just-plain funny (I know, I'm showing off my new HTML skills) contained in those letters taught me more about love and understanding than the 60's ever did. He embraced life, he embraced all who knew him, and he faced his own mortality with such dignity and peace that he will be my role model when my time comes. I will miss him forever, yet he will always be with me. And I have a huge smile on my face as I think of him explaining to God how the angel's wings could be made more energy efficient!

This is very sad, indeed. My heart sank when I read the news. It just won't be the same around here without derGoat's insight and memorable thoughts he bestowed upon each one of us.
It seems the good ones always leave us too soon.
You are in heaven, now. One with God. Able to graze greener pastures. Peace no longer awaits you.
We love you oh so much. I shall deeply treasure the kind and warm friendship you've given me.
Peace, my friend

Here's to you, Goat. I love you. May you rest in peace, and may the Lord give comfort to your family.
