In Fond Memory of Bob Lacey

Bob Lacey
1946 - 2004

Though I never met him personally, we talked several times by e-mail. I must say, Bob was a special person. He had a gift for bringing people together, and setting them straight at the same time. He could find humor in almost every situation, and he always had a clever, yet profound way to present it.

For the last 3 years, Bob has been touching the hearts and minds of so many people here. Nearly all of us could point to something positive he said or did that left a personal lasting impression. It's simply not going to be the same without him.

I'll really miss ya, buddy. Rest in peace.

Hi, this is Marc Hershon, Bob Lacey's cartooning partner from the Half Moon Bay Review. I am grieved to report that Bob passed away on Friday night, April 30th, after suffering a heart attack in the early hours of Saturday morning, April 24th.

Although emergency medical personnel were able to resuscitate him and rushed him from Half Moon Bay to the intensive care facility at Stanford Hospital, he never regained consciousness.

I know that Bob has been a fixture on this site for quite a while, and he would often tell me about the many funny cartoons and laughs that he'd find here. In addtion, the community of Half Moon Bay has lost one of their favorite and beloved characters. Personally, I've lost a good friend first and a partner in the world of cartoons second.

With sympathy,

- Marc Hershon
What can I say, I feel gutted. I thought his absence was unusual. I will send my condolences, as although I never met him, I feel he was a friend and will be greatly missed.

I sure that the place he has gone to will benefit greatly from his wit and wisdom.

RIP Bob

- Helen xx
Thanks for breaking the news, Marc. It hits me hard but I can see Bob had as much taste in picking his friends as he had in his humor.

I always thought I'd meet Bob face to face one day. Hoped for it. To lose such a strong personality at his still young age is devastating. I can't imagine how it's going to be without his humor and wisdom. I never got a chance to tell him but I think he knew, I was enriched by his presence. So long good friend.

- Ebdug
Very sad news, indeed. I thought it was odd Bob hadn't been to the board posting anything in awhile.

Too young, too young....

He enjoyed The Funny Pages immensely, and made many a good friend here. I (as many others) enjoyed viewing his latest toon feature here on the board. It was always right in step with current affairs.

What a great partner and friend you've lost, Marc. My condolences to all his family and friends.

Peace be with you, Bob.

- Love, Peggy [msquanna]
I'm just absolutely choked up by this awful, awful news. Despite never having met Bob, I considered him a great friend. When I first started posting here about a year ago, Bob was quick to send me a really nice email welcoming me aboard and saying how he liked my captions. Over the course of other email exchanges and message board postings, Bob's warmth, wit and humanity always shone through.

Like Ebdug, I always thought I'd meet Bob one day, and I'm still struggling to come to terms with the fact that that will never happen. My love and thoughts will be with his family and close friends and colleagues.

Rest in Peace, Bob, me old mate. The world's a colder place today.

- Love, Ed [Duffy]
Words can't quite describe the sadness I feel at Bob's untimely passing. Like many of you, I also knew Bob only through this board. But I, too, felt I "knew" Bob personally. After reading the San Francisco Chronicle tribute to Bob, I realized that I didn't know all that much about Bob.

Bob was nice enough to thank me in an email about a month ago when I posted something on this board to support his position. Although his email didn't really require a response, I wish I had responded to him. Now, I'll never have that chance. I feel really awful now. My heartfelt condolences to all his friends here and to his friend and partner Mr. Hershon.

Peace, Bob, wherever you are!

- R.K.
I am also very shocked and saddened to hear about Bob's passing. What a great loss to all of us here. I really enjoyed his perspective on issues and his very funny cartoons. He had a lot of friends here at TJOY, and a great personality. My condolences to all his friends and family.

- Kathy [Kitty]
My sympathies to Marc, and to Bob's fiancee and family. As there are many TJOY regulars who don't visit this board, I have posted the sad news with a caption in Bob's honor.

- Chuck
Stunning and devastating news. Bob was a major personality at this site. He will be missed dearly.

- Amy
The only thing I can add to what has been posted already is that I'm shocked beyond belief and that my deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

Rest in peace, Bob.

- Sher
I am in complete shock. At first I thought the post was a joke.

Bob was truly a gentlemen in every sense of the word. I will miss him deeply. And we were all better for having known him.

My condolences to his family and friends.

- Mary
I was stunned when I read of Bob's passing. I reflect the same sentiments and emotional loss that so many others here feel. Though I never had the opportunity to meet Bob, I was fortunate enough to have the privilege of exchanging mails. His honest candor and eagerness to help others has left a heartfelt impression on me, one that I will never forget. We have indeed lost a member of the family.

Find peace my friend.

- lew
Terrible news. Bob was a sweet and witty man and I, too, felt like I knew him. This site has lost a big piece of its heart. I will remember him as an example of warmth, grace and class.

- Grob
I am overcome with emotion and tears stream down my cheeks as I type this. I "met" Bob 10 years ago through Mort Gerberg's AOOL (America Out of Line) cartoon contest and have enjoyed his humor ever since. I am greatly saddened that I did not get to meet Bob in person and will miss his humor, wit and insight. My sympathy to his loved ones for their loss.

- edberger
I don't know what to say.

You know, he was the first person to welcome me here.

Good guy, that.

- FishermanFred
I am saddened beyond words about the untimely passing of Bob Lacey. I just read the tribute that Mark Simon wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle and feel that Bob would have been the first person on my list of people I wished I'd have met. Thank you for your wonderful humor Bob, may you rest in peace. My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.

- Dennis Silver
I am shocked and saddened to learn about Bob's untimely death. His intelligence, creativity, and passion for humor will be remembered in his passing as it had been respected during his life.

We've lost another good person around here.

My condolences to his family, friends, and all those who felt close to him.

- Bruce R.
This is very sad news. My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family.

- Jeri
I am also quite saddened by this tragic news....

Bob will be sorely missed by everyone on this site.

My condolences to his friends and family...

- John [Sredni]
Bob's charm and wit touched so many, and we will miss him greatly.

Bob, thank you for sharing the laughter.

- Chazzer
My condolences to the family and friends of Mr Lacey. He will be greatly miss here also!

- Coyote Killer
Like all who frequent this site, I was stunned to read of Mr. Lacy's death. He was such an integral part of this site and so filled with enthusiasm for life and all forms of humor. My condolences to all who were touched by his life.

- P.R.
Sorry if I can only repeat what everyone else has said, but it's true for me as well. Like Der Goat, I did not know Mr. Lacey personally, but I still feel as if I did. I can remember nothing but great humor and heart touching kindness from him in the few years I've been doing this. My deepest condolences to his family and world wide friends.

- Frank Monaco
I discovered TJOY and this site less than a year ago, but it didn't take me long to begin looking forward to reading Bob Lacey's captions and other contributions, as well as his encouraging comments to others. Very sad news.

- jwd
I was shocked to read of his passing today.

I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

He will be missed but never forgotten.

- Jim D.
It is truly sad to hear of the passing of one of the TJOY family. We read captions and messages from people we have never met and manage gain some insight into their personality. With this insight comes a different but very real friendship. When they are gone, we miss them terribly.

RIP friend Bob

- Shep
i am utterly heartbroken.

bob was a steadfast presence in my life for so many years and i'm having difficulty bearing the thought that he is gone.

i will remember bob most for his humor and his ongoing, unconditional acceptance of me through the years. he was a friend of the dearest kind.

i was blessed beyond words to have had the privilege to know him. his presence in my life will be sorely missed.

- michele [Ponytayl]
He was the first one to welcome me here...RIP

My condolences to his family .

I'm inspired by the touching eulogies presented in the Bob Lacey thread, so I thought I'd give Bob a chance to contribute to his own memory. Here's all of his Blowfish mentions over the last three years, in reverse order:

Kangaroo Judge to man in court

"You'll find in prison, Mr. Curtis, that the term 'down under' takes on a whole new context."

Tarzan to Cheetah with a peeled banana (Blowfish winner)

"Okay, I think you've had enough practice."

Woman to alien sharing a bed

"Wow! So if that's where your tongue is, what's in your mouth?"

Man holding stack of papers at woman's desk

"We've got to get all these reports in envelopes and mail them by tomorrow morning, Miss Wilson; looks like we'll be stuffing and licking all night."

Cabbie to passenger

"Sir, that's not the kind of tip I had in mind."

Woman to man whose head is engulfed in bar-b-que smoke

"I TOLD you if you didn't stop playing with that weenie you'd go blind!"

Coach to little league pitcher

"I'll let you play with mine if I can play with yours." - Lacey

Mom to kid as dad hovers in living room

"I've always known what he was, Timmy, but I never realized he was a 'floater.'"

A businessman to a dog in the office

"I think I'm going to promote you and give you a raise, Peabody; I like the smell of your butt."

Two kids outside the ticket window at an adult theatre

"The ticket dude says no minors unless accompanied by a priest."

Two birds (Blowfish winner)

"My wife just sits in the nest and expects me to provide for her; some days it feels like my pecker is going to fall off"

Clown in an employment line

"I see by your resume that you enjoy working with kids, Mr. Gacy."

Woman to smiley faced partner in bed

"Uh, Honey, when I said I wanted a visit from 'Mr. Happy,' that's not quite what I meant."

Kid writing letter with ball and glove on desk

"Dear Mr. Selig: Enclosed you will find my ball and glove. I trust you know where you can put them."

Woman to man waist deep in water (Phil's original cap was "That better be a snorkel.")

"That better not be a snorkel...!"

And the very first Blowfish award winner, a guy buried up to his neck in sand on the beach, looking up at a dude who was cut off at the knees by the frame

"Yeah, mine goes to the left like that, too." - Lacey

Kinda makes you laugh and cry at the same time, doesn't it?
